Downtown Tampa sits inside Hillsborough Bay, a shallower extension of greater Tampa Bay protected from the open Gulf by the Pinellas peninsula. The water is calmest in the morning before the sea breeze fills in around 11 a.m., then the chop builds through the afternoon. For Bayshore Boulevard cruises and downtown skyline photos, push off by 9:30 a.m. — you'll cruise glass-flat water past Davis Islands, under the Sunshine Skyway approach, and back. For sunset cruises, the chop is acceptable through 7 p.m. and the light is unbeatable. Avoid the Bayshore route during outgoing tide if you have guests prone to motion sickness — the current opposes the breeze and creates a short, steep wave pattern.
A Sample 4-Hour Tampa Itinerary
- 11:00 a.m. — Boarding at Maximo Marina, St. Petersburg. Welcome, safety briefing, sunscreen and drinks set out.
- 11:30 a.m. — Cruise north into Hillsborough Bay. Davis Islands to port, downtown Tampa skyline ahead, the University of Tampa minarets rising over the trees.
- 12:15 p.m. — Anchor near the Bayshore for swim, paddle, or photos. Tampa's curved seawall and palm-lined boulevard make a postcard frame.
- 1:30 p.m. — Cruise back south past Picnic Island Park, optional swim stop near Beer Can Island, or a sandbar pause off Apollo Beach.
- 2:30 p.m. — Return to Maximo Marina. Total run: ~35 nautical miles. Fuel for the entire route is included in the weekend package.
